About us

The Hungerford Bookshop can be found in our beautiful listed building at the heart of our historic town. Hungerford is the centre of the North Wessex Downs, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. Our award-winning Bookshop was announced as the South West Regional Winner in the 2015 Independent Bookseller of the Year Industry Awards and it’s not hard to understand why……

Owned and run by Emma and Alex, the bookshop team are passionate about books and the importance of independent shops. You won’t experience algorithms here. What we do offer is knowledge, personal recommendations, the chance to hear from the authors themselves and the joyful serendipity of discovering a title you never expected.

Features

Our Bookshop

hungerford book shop 01

We have established ourselves as a destination shop, known for the quality of the book choice and for our customer service. Customers often remark that we are a ‘proper bookshop’ and we are proud to be part of the community. We pride ourselves on always offering a tempting selection of books; for books are what we love.

We have always been thrilled with the whole shopping experience at ‘The Hungerford Book Shop’. I have used the shop for many years now – we are always greeted with a ‘can do’ attitude and it just feels great to support an independent business.

Our Events

Our-Events-Feature-Image-2Looking for something different to do this month? What could be more exciting than exploring new ideas and worlds with their creators? At the Hungerford Bookshop, we are believers in opening up book discussion and giving our customers access to the many brilliant authors out there. Take a look at some of the acclaimed writers we have hosted over the years. Our events are always held at one of the fantastic (and often historic) local venues in Hungerford and ticket prices often include money off the title being discussed and a glass (or two) of wine

Our Second hand books

If you visit our bookshop and delve a little deeper, at the back of the shop you will find the stairs to a hidden treasure trove – otherwise known as our basement. If you are looking for second-hand and antiquarian books, then this is the place to come. We are also assured it is particularly pleasant to spend time browsing in here during the Summer when it is the coolest space in Hungerford!

We have over 4000 titles to discover. Hunt through fiction and non-fiction, with particularly good sections on History and Transport, and pick up a long forgotten gem or/and a bargain.

We also have a selection of first editions, Folio Society books, signed copies, and rare & antiquarian books that can make great gifts or additions to your own personal collection. If you can’t find what you want, then we recommend Bertram Rota who specialise in Modern First Editions, books on Architecture and the Applied Arts, and Private Press Printing and Livres d’artiste.

Forthcoming events

Looking for second-hand and antiquarian books? Then try our basement downstairs. We have over 4000 titles down there, with particularly good sections on History and Transport. If you can’t find what you want, then we recommend Bertram Rota who specialise in Modern First Editions, books on Architecture and the Applied Arts, and Private Press Printing and Livres d’artiste. Visit their website, or visit them in Covent Garden.

We also stock Book Tokens, our own gift vouchers, cards, gift wrap, DVDs, Penguin merchandise, notebooks and calendars.

We can source out-of-print books, and can provide maps for planning permission. We are also the place to purchase tickets for The Hungerford Film Club.
