Food

Barbados' fabulous restaurant scene is calling out to be indulged. Visitors are spoilt with choices from superb eateries on spectacular vantage points with sea views, to low key old favourites with sumptuous typical cuisine.

Beaches

Barbados' platinum coast is legendary - paradise is found along the idyllic island shores that are a picture of natural beauty, and glistening azure waters are a treat to explore on a catamaran cruise, deep sea fishing, or out snorkelling and diving. We have picked our favourites that we think are unbeatable for swimming, surfing and swimming with turtles.

Ten top tips

It's that time of year when most of us are eagerly awaiting our summer holidays, even though some of us may not have actually got around to booking anything yet! Veronica from Hungerford's Fare Wise has generously put together the following list of things to bear in mind before you set off this year.

New British airway routes

For those yet to book our summer getaway it is worth bearing in mind that BA have recently opened up new direct routes from Heathrow to Grand Canaria, Mallorca and Corfu.

If you're planning on travelling until later in the year there are some terrific bargains to be had. Prices to New York from Heathrow start at £45 plus taxes for those travelling between 29th October and 11th December. Contact Fare Wise on 01488 686858 or at www.farewise.com for details.

Airport parking

To save both time and money, always pre-book your holiday parking. Most people will think it out of their price-bracket but there are some incredible deals on valet parking, so ten minutes hunting around on the internet will be time well spent.

Visas

Visa rules are constantly in flux so don't suppose you know what a country's visa requirements and always check. For Turkey, visitors now need to apply online for a visa. For India, which is suffering long delays with its postal system, online visa applications are recommended and a personal interview is required before visas are issued. For those travelling to Russia, a personal interview and set of finger prints is required! Sounds like a lot of hassle doesn't it? Get the experts at Fare Wise Travel to take the strain with their special Visa Service.

South Africa

Due to issues with child-trafficking, the South African authorities now require that anybody travelling with children will need to be carrying a copy of their FULL birth certificate.

Car hire

The good news is that a paper copy of your UK driving licence is not longer required as car hire companies access all of the relevant information from the DVLA database, though you will still need your driving licence with photo ID. It pays to shop around and read the small print to avoid unforeseen problems and surprises: some companies will only take credit and not debit cards and the card being used MUST be in the name of the driver. Some companies charge very large deposits to hire cars so it is always good to check before you commit.

Travel insuarance

As with car hire, rates for travel insurance vary widely. It is well worth checking out special insurance policies for the over 50s to get some good deals. Similarly, over 65s will find insurance which covers a multitude of ailments by getting in touch with Age UK on 0800 066 5634.

Malaria

Malaria is a lethal disease and must be taken seriously. Always get in touch with your local surgery at least a month before you travel to get started on the correct treatment.

Learn a language

Even though English is widely spoken around the world, our hosts always appreciate even the most halting attempt to communicate in their own language. Why not try to master even a little of the language by getting a language CD.

Winter sun holidays

For those planning to travel to the opposite hemisphere in winter, remember to shop for your clothes NOW. Come November, there will be very little in the shops.

Holiday clothing

Even seasoned travellers can come unstuck when it comes to packing, especially if the destination climate is changeable. It is generally agreed that layers are the way to go and however many clothes you think you are going to need, the chances are you will need less than half those items to pack light! People become particularly unstuck with footwear but the perfect holiday shoes is the espadrille, light and easy to pack they can be dressed up or down.

wedding sandals fare wise

With the cost of weddings spiralling and the inevitable battles about who to invite, couples are opting to marry abroad in greater numbers than ever before. It is a sensible plan on so many levels: it sorts the wheat from the chaff on the guest list, avoids the stress of planning for our temperamental British climate, which, let's face it, tends to throw up surprises even in the middle of summer and more importantly, frees you from the over-dressed and eye-wateringly expensive formality of a wedding at home.

Many brides and grooms are deciding it is simpler and lovelier by far to travel to somewhere hot and beautiful and tie the knot for a fraction of what it would cost to do it at home. The Sandals Group of Resorts, voted the World's Leading All-Inclusive Resorts, are scattered across the topical islands of Jamaica, Saint Lucia, the Bahamas, Grenada and Barbados. Designed exclusively for couples with the emphasis on luxury, Sandals are currently offering a FREE WEDDING when you book to stay for three nights or longer at any of their resorts.

Cross-country Skiing

It seems niche and little known but cross-country skiing is attracting more and more interest each year. A more relaxed way to explore the winter landscape but is still a great cardio workout.
