SWIFT Medics are trained volunteer pre-hospital emergency care doctors who attend road traffic accidents and medical emergencies in Wiltshire when an incident is so serious that the NHS ambulance team needs the help of an appropriately qualified Doctor at the scene. In the worst cases, they administer painkillers stronger than morphine and provide pre-hospital intensive care by administering other treatment, such as anaesthesia, that paramedics are not able to provide. Each year they save a life or prevent a life changing injury for approximately 50 people, all on a budget of just £28,000, not a penny of which is provided by the Government.

Entirely reliant on public donations to fund their work, SWIFT Medics’ life-saving work has attracted the support of BMW and Mini dealer, Dick Lovett Hungerford who have provided them with a brand new emergency response vehicle. The 3 Series Touring X Drive has dramatically improved the safety of both the medical responders and the public. SWIFT Medics’ Dr. Phil Lucas says of the car, ‘It’s very solid and feels good to drive in an emergency. It certainly feels safe.’

Even though SWIFT Medics’ professionals donate their services free of charge, providing one new volunteer Doctor with blue light driver training, medical supplies and equipment to intervene in an emergency costs £10,200, so Dick Lovett’s support has been crucial to keeping this extraordinary service on the road. Hats off to businesses who are willing to step in where the Government will not.
