Yukimasa Ida Soleil No1 hungerford left

On the 17th May 2017 Yusaku Maezawa, a 41 year old online fashion retail mogul and the 14th richest man in Japan, paid $110.5 million at Sotheby's in New York for a work by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

This purchase was the 6th most expensive of any work of art at auction and only ten have topped the $100m mark.

Later that day Mr Maezawa posted on Instagram that the painting made him feel "so much excitement and gratitude for my love of art" , a feeling he wished to share with "as many people as possible"

Jean-Michel Basquiat's story is one of poverty, fame and tragedy. Born in Brooklyn NY, to Haitian father and Puerto Rican mother this one time graffiti street artist gained international celebrity in the 1980's for his works on canvas only to lose his life to heroin addiction in 1988 aged just 27.

The prolific collector Mr Maezawa isn't confined to multi-million dollar purchases though as in the same art collection as the new Basquiat hangs an up and coming Japanese artist called Yukimasa Ida who is represented in the UK by the OIL Gallery on Bridge Street, Hungerford.

In December 2016 Matthew Larking, art correspondent for the Japan Times declared that Yukimasa Ida was one of two Japanese artists to follow. Mr Maezawa obviously agrees with Larking having purchased Ida's work to sit in his Tokyo based collection.

The first two works of Ida's that Oil has sold are portraits of a Dutch Dominican model called Soleil Hulscher. Ida spotted Soleil on the street in NY and asked her if he could take pictures of her to paint. Soleil obliged and Ida painted a series of portraits that have sold in the U.K. and Japan. Oil is receiving more works and plans a solo show in September 2017 which will be Ida's first show outside of Japan.

Oil owner Justin Cook commented, "I travelled to NY and Tokyo spending time with Ida after seeing a picture of his work that Mr Maezawa had posted on his Instagram feed after buying it early 2016. It struck me as something very unique and different and I just had to meet him and find out more. Yukimasa is a fantastic addition to the Oil family and I am just so happy about it."
