About Us

Hungerford was officially twinned with the town of Ligueil in Indre-et-Loire, France in 1980. Since then there have been many group delegations to and from the two towns including the Fire Brigade, the Round Table, the Town Band and the John 0' Gaunt School.

Ligueil is a delightful town of about 2,500 inhabitants in central France about 40 km from the city of Tours. It lies in beautiful countryside on the edge of the Loire valley surrounded by farms and pretty villages. There are many chateaux and vineyards close by.

The Hungerford Twinning Association is a friendly, sociable group of all ages who live in and around Hungerford. Our aim is to promote friendship and cultural enrichment as we alternate playing host to twinning exchanges with the people of Ligueil. Many of the close friendships that have been established continue over many years and embrace new generations of “twinners”. You don’t have to speak fluent French to take part; in fact you would be surprised how many twinners communicate without the benefit of a shared language, but of course a smattering of French does help.

New members are always welcome as they bring fresh ideas to the partnership and help to keep our twinning activities rich and exciting. Annual membership costs just £10 per household.

Our annual highlight is an exchange visit either to or from France. This year we visited Ligueil for a long weekend over the May bank holiday. We travelled by coach , Eurostar and TGV to Ligueil. This was an enjoyable and sociable way to travel and many commented that they preferred this to taking the ferry. The cost was only £150 per person for a very enjoyable holiday in a beautiful part France.

We have posted several photos from our exchange visits in our photo gallery so that you can get a better idea of what is is like to be a twinner.

We will be hosting a visit from Ligueil twinners in August 2016 so why not get involved? If you have a spare bedroom you can host a French family, or a couple or just an individual to suit your circumstances. But if you don’t have room to accommodate guests you can still get involved by helping to entertain our visitors. You can join in as many of the organised events as you wish and you can organise outings just with your visitors if you wish. Alternatively, you will easily find another host family happy to join forces and share their events with you. And then in 2017 you can enjoy a reciprocal trip over to Ligueil!

Between exchanges and throughout the year, we hold regular social and fundraising events, giving members, friends and potential new members informal opportunities to get together. Some events are open to all-comers, and these are published in Hungerford's "Whats On" page.
