Hungerford to host second literary festival

hungerford literary festival 2013 b

Hungerford is to have its second literary festival after the success of the first last October. This year it runs from 17th – 20th October – extended so that festival-goers will have a greater opportunity to attend more events.

It launches at The Town Hall with bestselling novelist Robert Harris talking about his newly published historical thriller, ‘A Soldier and a Spy’ inspired by the Dreyfuss affair.

One of Britain’s leading military historians, Sir Max Hastings, will be talking about his much-anticipated book on the First World War. History buffs may also be interested to hear Anne De Courcy talking about husband-hunting in the Raj, John Ashdown-Hill talking about his research that inspired the dig for Richard III, and Roger Day on the defence of marlborough during WWII

There will be plenty of events for fiction-lovers including Lindsey Davis – best known for her Roman mysteries - Conn Iggulden who will be launching the first book in his series ‘Wars of the Roses’, and a ‘Book Brunch’ with Ellis Peter’s Historical Dagger award-winner Andrew Taylor, local novelist Charlotte Betts and crime writer Lynn Shepherd.

Poets can pop into the bookshop to read out a poem in an informal ‘open mic’ session.

Young children can attend a free event with writer and illustrator Katie Cleminson – and older children will be kept busy by ‘jaw-droppingly’ good party entertainers, Sharky and George.

All this plus a man with a live chicken called Sarkozy at Cobbs, Prof Elaine Fox on the science of optimism and pessimism, and drinks ad antiques trivia at Hungerford Arcade.

Programmes will be available to pick-up from the Hungerford Bookshop, the library and local businesses from September. Tickets go on sale mid-September.
